ChapterCheck Privacy Policy

Last updated: 5 October 2026

ChapterCheck is an iOS reading app. This policy explains what we collect, why, where it lives, and how to get rid of it. It describes the app as actually built, including the parts that are deliberately private.

1. What we collect

Account. Your email address, used to sign you in and to send you a sign-in link. Your chosen username. Nothing else — no phone number, no real name, no date of birth.

Reading data. The books on your shelf, and which chapters you have marked as finished.

Your recall writing. The paragraph you write from memory after finishing a chapter, and the grader's list of what you kept and what you missed. This is the most personal thing in the app, and it is treated that way — see §5.

What you choose to post. Your ratings, reviews, comments, chapter posts, lists and the readers you follow. These are visible to other readers unless you make your shelf private.

Reports and blocks. If you report a review, comment or profile, we keep the report (who sent it, what it points at, and the reason you gave) so we can review it. If you block a reader, we keep that so their posts stay hidden from you.

Usage limits. A timestamped record of each AI drafting request (contents, review draft, chapter outline), with no text in it, so we can apply a daily limit. We do not use it for anything else.

Subscription. Whether your subscription is active, which plan you bought, and the transaction identifier Apple provides. We never see or store your card details. Apple processes the payment and tells us only whether it succeeded.

Free accounts. If ads are shown to free accounts, they are non-personalized: not based on a device advertising identifier, and not based on your activity in other apps or on other websites.

2. What we do not collect

No location. No contacts. No photos or camera roll. No health data. No advertising identifier. No tracking of you across other apps or websites. No third-party analytics that build a profile of you.

3. Why we process it

4. The grading step, specifically

To grade a recall, your paragraph and information about the chapter are sent to our grading provider, OpenRouter, which routes them to OpenAI's models. Our configuration pins grading to OpenAI with data collection denied, meaning your writing is not retained for training. We do not send your name, email address or username along with it.

5. Where it lives, and who can read it

Data is stored with Supabase (Postgres, authentication and file storage) acting on our behalf. Your check-ins and the chapter records behind them are private: only your own account can read them. That is enforced by the database itself, not by app code, so it holds even if the app is tampered with.

6. Who we share with

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share it for advertising purposes beyond §6's non-personalized ads.

7. Keeping it and deleting it

Your data stays until you delete it. You can delete your account from inside the app (You → Delete account). That permanently and immediately deletes your profile, your shelf, your check-ins and your subscription record. There is no soft-delete and no shadow copy: once it is gone, it is gone.

One exception: reports. A report is evidence about content, so reports you filed, and reports others filed about you, are kept after your account is deleted. The fields naming the reporter and the reported account are cleared; the report's reason, details and the identifier of what it pointed at remain (for a reported profile, that identifier is the deleted account's former id), as does the notification email we received when it was filed.

8. Your rights

You can ask to access, correct, export, or delete your data, and you can object to processing. Account deletion is built into the app; for anything else, contact us at support@chaptercheck.app. If you are in the UK or EEA, our legal bases are: performance of a contract (providing the service you asked for), consent (where we ask for it), and legitimate interests (keeping the service secure and working).

9. Children

ChapterCheck is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.

10. Changes

If this policy changes materially we will update this page and change the date at the top.
